Common LG Washing Machine Problems And How To Troubleshoot Them

LG is rated as excellent for predicted reliability among top-loading and front-loading washing machines. Occasionally your appliance may start to malfunction. And you’ll quickly want to find out the reason why. Look at common LG washing machine problems and how to troubleshoot them here…

When the Washing Machine:

Won’t start

Common problems with non-starting can be related to the user control and display board. Any issues with the power supply will prevent the washing machine from turning on. And a defective timer will need to be replaced. A faulty door lock will also prevent the washing machine from starting.

Won’t fill

This could be due to a faulty water inlet valve not letting the water get into the machine. Or inadequate water pressure will cause the valve not to work properly. The water inlet valve hose connection may need professionally cleaning or replacing.

Won’t spin

If the lid switch assembly is defective this will stop the washer from spinning. As will a damaged motor coupling due to overloading. The drive belt can become loose on the pulleys, and the drive motor might be at fault. The stator and rotor assemblies create a strong magnetic field that rotates the drum. If these are damaged the washing machine won’t spin.

Won’t drain

The drain pump may be obstructed with small objects which can cause damage. The drain system itself may have blocked hoses. And the water pump belt could be broken or simply worn out. Drain hoses can become twisted or split. And other culprits are broken door strikes and lid switch assemblies.

Is noisy

Bearings in the drum can fail. And drum sealing can also be an issue. The drive pulley can wear out, or crack and break. A failed motor coupling, clutch, and drive belt can also be contributing factors. Faulty gears within the transmission and water inlet valves will make a noise. A whirring noise may be due to a clogged filter causing the drain pump to make a much louder noise than normal.

Is vibrating

The job of the shock absorbers is to dampen the vibration. If one of them is broken this can cause shaking. Failing suspension rods and springs, and counter balance springs can also cause vibrations. If the washing machine isn’t level, or has stabilising shipping bolts fitted these can cause shaking issues. Other reasons may be loss of fluid for the balance ring, or worn out snubber pads.

Is leaking

A cracked or damaged drain pump, drum seal, or door seals are the most likely causes. The drain hose may be split, or water may be leaking thorough the drum bearings. Leaks can also come from the detergent drawer if it’s overfilled or not closed properly.

Is overflowing

The water inlet valve may be defective and need replacing. Or the washing machine pressure switch can fail to shut off power when the correct water level is reached. If the water pressure is too low the water inlet valve may not fully close after the power is shut off, causing it to overflow.

Identifying Error Codes

LG Washing machine error codes will indicate when a certain fault is detected. LG direct drive washing machine problems in modern appliances are quite uncommon. But when a potential problem is identified the message will appear on the display. For example, LG washing machine UE error signifies that there’s an imbalanced load. And a fast spin would cause damage. LG washing machine dE error shows that the washing machine door is open.

Other washing machine error codes include: CL – the child safety lock is on CE – current error indicative of short circuiting IE – water inlet issues SE – motor fault detected AE – suspected leak LE – locked machine motor FE – overfill situation PE – water level sensor fault PF – power failure tE – water heating problem OE – draining water difficulties dHE – dry heater snag EHE and/or ELE – heating element concern
