Common Zanussi washing machine problems and how to troubleshoot them

Thanks to modern technology, Zanussi washing machine fault finding is a breeze. Understanding error codes might save you from the embarrassment of calling out a service technician for something as simple as a dirty filter or a door that didn't quite catch. And when your machine does need professional servicing the codes show the engineer exactly where the problem lies.

How Error Messages are Displayed

Zanussi washing machine problems, including faults and issues, can be identified through the display of fault codes in one of two ways. In Zanussi machines equipped with an LED display, you'll typically observe an E followed by two numbers. However, if your Zanussi washing machine doesn't feature a display panel, the fault code is indicated through a combination of red and green flashes on the start/stop light. Count the red flashes to determine the first number and the green ones for the second.

Understanding Error Codes

Codes are grouped according to the systems where the fault has developed:

E1 codes An error code that starts with a 1, or a single red flash followed by a number of green flashes indicates that your Zanussi washing machine problems are in some way related to water:

  • E11 - The machine is not filling. Assuming the hoses are correctly attached and not kinked or squashed, your engineer will check the water inlet valve.
  • E13 - Your washing machine is leaking. You might expect this to be an unnecessary fault code as the classic symptom of a leaky washer is a wet floor! However, water could be trapped in the base of the machine for some time before this happens. This error code means you'll spot the problem at an earlier stage and avoid water damage to your machine.

E2 codes All E2 codes indicate problems with drainage. This includes faults with the pump or its wiring and connections. Zanussi washing machine filter problems are also likely to show an E2 error code as a blocked filter will prevent the appliance from draining correctly.

E3 codes These relate to the pressure switch in the washing machine which monitors the amount of water in the machine.

  • E35 - Indicates that the water level is too high. This can sometimes be caused by excessive foaming because you've used more detergent than required or even the wrong sort of detergent.
  • E33, E36, E37 and E39 - Indicate various errors in the pressure switch circuit. Your service engineer will know exactly what the numbers mean so they'll be able to trace the problem and repair it quickly.

E4 codes All E4 codes indicate problems with the door or locking mechanism. One to be aware of is E41 which simply indicates that the door is open. It's worth checking to make sure it's latched securely before calling an engineer. Other E4 codes indicate faults on the lock or the wiring between the latch and the main control panel.

E5 codes Any problem with the washing machine motor, the brushes or wiring between the control panel and the motor will show an E5 code.

E6 codes and E71 These codes relate to the heating system. Examples include

  • E61- The water is not heating properly. This is generally due to a faulty heating element.
  • E62 - The water is overheating. The most likely cause is a fault in the control panel.
  • E71 - There is a fault in the water temperature sensor.

E8 and E9 codes Indicate a problem with the programming of the control panel
