How To Change An Oven Element

When your oven isn’t getting hot the issue may be a faulty heating element – a defective fan oven element is a really common problem. It’s not hard to replace the part if you’re prepared to work within the tight restrictions of the oven itself. How can I change the element in my oven? Read on…

1. Switch off the power

Remember before you attempt any repairs turn off the power at the mains to make sure that you’re safe – if there’s not a separate breaker switch for the oven itself be sure to turn off all individual breakers and unplug the appliance.

2. Remove the base panel

The first step of the repair is to take off the panel covering the heating element – they vary in how they’re fixed in place, but are normally held by a number of screws. Some ovens have flat metal covers that are designed to keep the elements hidden – simply feel for the grooved lip and pull up sharply to remove and reveal the oven element. Signs of failure include burns, bulges, and splits in that particular area.

3. Unscrew the element

Most ovens have two connection sites at the front and back – screwing the piece to the wall of the oven. Use a flathead screwdriver to unscrew them, keeping the screws safely in a container to avoid losing them. If your element is secured with bolts you can use a nut driver tool to undo it – if the element is fixed by screws to the rear of the oven you’ll need to pull out the oven to remove the back plate.

4. Detach the wires

Be careful not to pull off the electrical wires as you remove the element – and make sure they don’t slip back through the holes in the oven or you’ll have to pull the oven out to retrieve them. It’s a good idea to tape them to the inner wall – and make a note of which way round they’re connected to the oven for ease of putting them back. You may need pliers to release any connectors or interlocking metal inserts.

5. Identify the element make and model

On one of the element’s metal faces you should be able to find a model number, brand name, or serial code that allows you to purchase an identical replacement. If you’re unable to find an exact match from your local store you may have to search online.

6. Fit the new element

Align the element making sure it has the metal screw plated facing down, and the terminals facing the back of the oven – double check that the holes for the screws all lineup. If you’ve got a convection oven the element will be installed in the same way but just go on top.

7. Reconnect the wires

You’ll be able to guide the wire ends of the terminals back into the element with your pliers – you’ll hear them click when they’re firmly in place. Make sure each wire is running to the right terminal – if you get them crossed you’ll short the power supply and have a potential fire hazard. Once the wires are properly secure you can slide the element back until it’s flush against the back oven wall.

8. Screw down

Insert the screws into the corresponding apertures on the metal plates at the bottom of the element – tighten them with a screwdriver or nut driver tool until they won’t turn any more. Giving the element a gentle shake will check for any loose connections.

9. Replace the base

Press down a separate cover or secure any relevant fastenings and screws before switching your oven back on – if the base panel hasn’t been lined up correctly you may notice raised corners or gapping.

10. Test the new heating element

Turn the power back on and set the oven to warm up – it should only take a few minutes for the element to radiate heat, and it should glow red when it’s hot. Any smoking is quite normal as this is the protective factory coating burning off – and there may be a slight smell.

You can also test the oven element with a multimeter which determines if there’s a break in the circuit – placing a lead on each terminal will provide you with a reading – if you don’t get one there may be an issue with the wiring and it’s time to call in the professionals!
