Oven Fan Not Working? Here Is What To Do

A fan assisted or fan oven is an oven that has a fan to circulate hot air around the food – distributing the heat evenly and allowing the food to cook in less time, and at a lower temperature than a conventional oven. A faulty oven performance is often due to one or two parts of the fan not functioning correctly. Oven fan not working? Here is what to do.

The Motor

If the oven fan is not spinning it could be down to a faulty motor. Other signs include excessive noise coming from the fan, and ineffective circulation of heat. A noisy fan is often caused by dry or worn out bearings in the motor which can usually be resolved by replacing the fan motor.

A temporary solution to stop any noise is to grease the bearings, but the heat will quickly dry out the lubricant and the fault or noise will return. Faults could be due to the oven cooling fan not working or the circulation fan at the centre of the back panel malfunctioning – repairs can be quite complex if you have a universal fan motor for example. If you don't have electrical knowledge and the right tools it's safer to leave the repair or replacement of the fan to the experts.

What you should do is turn off and unplug the oven and then get in touch with a qualified technician who can remove the inside panel and turn the fan manually. This indicates whether the fan stopped working in the oven due to a defective motor that needs replacing – or due to other issues. Your repair specialist will check if a fan blade has become loose and see if there are any food debris obstructions causing the fan to fail. Only then will a decision be made if it's more cost-effective to replace the unit or carry our repairs.

The Element

A common cause for your fan not working on the oven is element failure. Your oven may look as if it's working properly but fails to generate heat. Burning and bulging are visual signs that the fan oven is not heating up properly and the element needs replacing. This should be done by an experienced repair expert.

If the fan oven is not heating up you can test the element with a multimeter. Set the meter onto a low resistance and place the probes onto the element terminal. For an element that's working properly, the reading should be less than a hundred ohms – any reading dramatically higher would indicate the presence of a fault.

If the oven is blowing cold air, which means the fan is working, and the oven thermostat light is on, the element surrounding the fan could be damaged. If the damage isn't visible the element could be broken inside the casing – you'll need an appliance technician to inspect and confirm this for you. A frequently asked question is can I still use my oven if the fan is broken? The answer is no – as the oven will quickly overheat and this can be extremely dangerous. The solution is to contact a trusted oven repair provider.
