40°C

This wash cycle is ideal for more hardy fabrics such as cotton, linen, viscose, and acrylics. The 40°C is the most balanced and probably the best all-round cycle for the average household.

30°C

These days this cycle can be used for wools, silks, and brightly coloured fabrics that are prone to shrinking. With a good detergent it can a great regular temperature to save energy as the wash is far shorter than those at higher degrees. This temperature may struggle with tougher stains and materials though.

20°C

Since 2013 all washing machines have been legally required to have a 20◦ C wash to help save energy as this temperature dramatically reduces running costs. However this programme is only suitable for lightly soiled and delicate garments that simply need refreshing – stubborn stains will need a couple of washes. Bear in mind that low temperature washes may cause a build-up of detergent around the drawer and door so they need to be cleaned regularly.
