What Is AGA Cooker?

The AGA cooker is excellent for all cooking styles from producing light cakes to succulent roasts. These heat storage stoves and cookers were invented in 1922, made from cast iron which absorbs heat at a low intensity, and then expends it for cooking. Using an AGA can make homes more energy efficient as they also do other jobs such as replacing radiators. What is AGA cooker? Read on…

Modern AGAS

The vast majority of AGA cookers sold today are programmable and use the same radiant heat to cook, but are designed to be switched off like a regular cooker when not in use, saving even more energy. An AGA is always ready to cook instantly with thermostatic controls maintaining AGA oven temperatures, and high levels of insulation ensuring fuel economy.

Inside the oven, the heat comes simultaneously from all surfaces making a kind and gentle cooking process which keeps food moist and retains flavour. There are no switches or dials as the AGA takes care of itself.

The AGA consists of:

  • Insulated covers: open them to find hot plates instantly ready to cook
  • Boiling plate: large enough to hold three saucepans at once
  • Heat source: choose from electricity, oil, natural or propane gas
  • Simmering plate: can also be used as a griddle with its gentle heat
  • Baking oven: moderate baking temperatures are perfect for cakes and biscuits
  • Roasting oven: spacious and versatile for grilling and baking
  • Simmering oven: slow-cooked foods are tender and flavoursome
  • Warming oven: keeps food warm without drying it out and keeps plates warm too

How to use an Aga

The heat indicator will give you a guide to the amount of heat being stored in the castings inside the AGA. As the food absorbs heat whilst cooking the gauge will drop, before stabilising back to the normal position. Some models may display this electronically on the handset. The main control is a simple valve which can be slightly turned to get the correct temperature.

You can make adjustments to the thermostat in small stages and allow the cooker 24 hours for the changes to take effect. Before you begin cooking make sure the indicator has changed to the required settings. If you’re going to be cooking large amounts of food you’ll need to turn the thermostat up temporarily to increase the heat storage.

If you enjoy slow-cooked food you can leave the dish in the appropriate oven and it’ll be cooked to perfection. After using the hot plates or ovens, simply close the lid or door to avoid any heat loss.
